1997/8

Saturday 8th November 1997 8pm at St Martin's Church, Epsom
Vaughan Williams Mass in G minor and Rachmaninov The Liturgy of St John Chrysostum

Vaughan Williams's Mass in G minor for soli (SATB) and double chorus was written in 1921 and dedicated 'To Gustav Holst and his Whitsuntide Singers'.

In the Orthodox Church the word 'Liturgy' refers specifically to the eucharistic service - the equivalent of the Mass in the West. There are a number of forms of the Liturgy used on different occasions during the year. Rachmaninov set The Liturgy of St John Chrysostum, which is that applicable to normal Sundays and weekdays and thus most frequently used, in July 1910. The first complete authentic modern edition was produced by Anthony Antolini in 1987 and it was this which we used for our performance. All Orthodox music is sung by unaccompanied voices. Those familiar with the same composer's All-Night Vigil (Vespers) will know that Rachmaninov makes great demands on his singers - particularly the basses because of the many low notes. Nikolai Danilin, senior director of the Moscow Synodal Choir and original conductor of both the Liturgy and the Vespers, wrote to Rachmaninov: "Where on earth are we to find such basses? They are as rare as asparagus at Christmas."

A CONCERT OF INSTRUMENTAL AND CHORAL MUSIC BY TIM STEVENSON With the Brodsky Quartet, Stephen Bell horn and Christopher O'Neal oboe.
Tim Stevenson tragically died at the age of 32. Cited by Sir David Willcocks as "one of the most gifted young musicians of his generation" this concert is a celebration of his chamber music. The varied programme of instrumental and choral works includes two world premiers, Heron and Suite for Solo Violin, featuring the Brodsky Quartet and their leader, Andrew Haveron. The Suite for Violin was written for Andrew Haveron whilst a pupil at the Purcell School where Tim Stevenson was Head of Composition. Stephen Dodgson (composer) writes that the concert "will be an opportunity for many of us to become acquainted with a telling range of Tim's talent and achievement."
Given in association with The Stevenson Music Foundation.
